Finding Joy Between Departures

There is something magical about arriving at a new destination, but if we aren’t careful, we can spend so much time anticipating the arrival that we miss the journey altogether.
International airports have a way of testing our patience. Long security lines, delayed flights, crowded terminals, and unexpected gate changes can leave us feeling frustrated before our adventure has even begun. Yet these moments also offer us a choice.
We can resist what is happening, or we can embrace the pause.
Mindfulness begins with accepting what is outside of our control. Flight delays happen. Weather changes. Mechanical issues arise. Becoming upset won’t change the departure time, but changing our mindset can completely transform the experience.
Preparation is one of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves. Pack a good book. Download a podcast you’ve been wanting to hear. Bring a journal to capture your thoughts or dreams for the trip ahead. Enjoy a leisurely coffee while people watching. Strike up a conversation with a fellow traveller. Practice gratitude for the opportunity to travel in the first place.
International airports are fascinating crossroads where thousands of stories intersect. Families reunite. Friends say goodbye. New adventures begin. If we slow down and observe, we become part of something much bigger than ourselves.
The destination should never be the only enjoyable part of travelling. Every moment, from leaving home to arriving at your final destination, is part of your story.
Today, if your travel plans don’t unfold exactly as expected, remember that joy doesn’t wait at the destination. It travels with you.
A peaceful mind can turn a delayed flight into an unexpected opportunity to rest, reflect, connect, and simply be present.
Because the best journeys aren’t measured only by the places we visit, they’re measured by how fully we experience each moment along the way. The next time you find yourself waiting at an airport, put your phone away for a few minutes. Take a deep breath, observe the world around you, and notice three things that make you smile. You may discover that the journey has already begun.
Patiently yours, Ms. Mindful Traveller
