There is something to be said for choosing sleep, especially when there is always something happening and the temptation to stay up just a little longer is hard to resist.

There might be one more conversation to enjoy, one more drink with friends, another episode to watch, or a beautiful evening that you don’t want to end. Then there is that familiar little voice whispering, You don’t want to miss out! We live in a world that encourages us to squeeze every last minute out of the day, as though going to bed means we are somehow missing an opportunity.

Have you ever noticed how much lighting can change the way you feel about a space?

A little light can make a surprisingly big difference. Think about a dark corner that feels forgotten or uninviting. Add a small lamp, a candle or even a simple prism that catches the sunlight and throws a spectrum of colour across the walls, and suddenly that same corner feels warm, welcoming and full of life. Nothing about the space has changed, except the light, yet somehow our perspective has changed too.

Kairos: When the Timing Is Just Right

There are two Greek words for time: Chronos, the time we measure by clocks and calendars, and Kairos, the beautiful idea of the right moment, the perfect timing, when things seem to fall into place just as they are meant to.

Sometimes finding your people and finding your place in the world feels a little like Kairos.

As we have built our life in Puerto Vallarta, we have discovered that finding a community is about so much more than finding a neighbourhood or a place to call home. It is about the connections, the friendships, the familiar faces and the people who make an unfamiliar place feel like it has always been yours.

Family, Beyond This Side of Life

There is something deeply moving about Día de Muertos, the Day of the Dead, and the way Mexican families honour those who have passed before them. It is a beautiful reminder that family doesn’t end when someone takes their last breath. The love, the stories, the memories and the connections remain woven into the lives of those who are still here.

In Mexico, this tradition is much more than a celebration or a colourful display of flowers, candles and beautifully decorated altars. It is a meaningful cultural tradition, rooted in generations of history, in which families remember and honour their loved ones. Families create ofrendas, often including photographs, favourite foods, meaningful objects and marigolds, as a way of welcoming and remembering those who have gone before them. It is an expression of love, remembrance and the enduring connection between generations.

There is something truly magical about the sun. It is one of those gifts we often take for granted, even though it gives us so much. It brings warmth to our skin, light to our days, energy to the earth and a natural rhythm that has guided humanity since the beginning of time. Wherever we find ourselves in the world, the sun is a familiar companion, rising to welcome a new day and setting to remind us that another one has come to a close.

Water has a way of finding us wherever we are in the world. Sometimes it is as simple as a cold glass of water when we wake up, that first satisfying sip of sparkling water with supper, or a warm shower that washes away the dust, sweat and worries of the day. Other times, it is standing beside a waterfall, listening to a brook babble over the rocks, watching rain dance against a window or sitting quietly as ocean waves roll onto the shore. Water isn’t just something we need to survive; it is something we experience with our whole being.

A Feast for the Senses: The Flavours of Puerto Vallarta

One of the greatest joys of spending time in Puerto Vallarta is undoubtedly the food. It’s a place where eating well doesn’t have to mean complicated recipes, fancy restaurants or a long list of ingredients. Some of the most memorable meals come from the simplest things, prepared fresh and with a whole lot of flavour.

From a beautifully grilled red snapper, caught locally and served with a squeeze of lime, to fish tacos topped with fresh cabbage, pico de gallo and a little salsa, the flavours of Mexico have a way of making your tastebuds happy. Then there are the tortillas! Made fresh from corn, often prepared right in front of you, warm and wonderfully fragrant. There’s something about a freshly made tortilla that makes even the simplest taco feel like a little celebration. Real ingredients, traditional preparation and none of the unnecessary extras you often find in packaged foods.

The first morning of vacation has its own kind of magic. Before the plans begin, before the bags are unpacked completely, before the hours fill themselves with places to go and things to do, there is a quiet pause. You wake up somewhere different, and for a moment, nothing is expected of you.

Notice the light coming through the window. Feel the unfamiliar softness or firmness of the bed beneath you. Listen to the sounds of this new place. Let yourself breathe a little more slowly.

Living in Mexico offers us the opportunity to experience traditions that invite us to see the world a little differently. One of the most beautiful is Día de Muertos, or Day of the Dead, a celebration of remembrance, family, and the enduring connection between the living and those who have passed away.

At first glance, the colourful flowers, decorated skulls, candles, music, and elaborate altars might look like a festival. But beneath the vibrant colours lies something deeply meaningful: the belief that our loved ones are remembered, welcomed, and celebrated through the stories we share, the foods they enjoyed, and the traditions passed down through generations.

There’s something special about volunteering for something you love. For us, it meant picking up paintbrushes, measuring tapes, and a few other tools to paint the lines on our pickleball courts. It might not sound like a grand adventure, but when people come together with a shared goal, even the simplest tasks can become memorable moments.

There was laughter, conversation, teamwork, and, of course, a few little mistakes along the way. A line that needed adjusting, a spot that needed touching up, and a few cleanups before we could call it a job well done! But that’s part of the fun. When everyone pitches in, nobody expects perfection on the first try. We figure it out together, lend a hand, and enjoy the process as much as the finished product.
